Genomic imprinting is a phenomenon when expressions of genes are not equal between alleles of paternal or maternal origin alleles. Some imprinted genes control endosperm growth and by that impact on final seed size. Therefore, identifying imprinted genes holds big promises for agricultural technology.
I’m currently studying the evolution of imprinted genes from two close relatives of Arabidopsis, Capsella rubella and Capsella grandiflora. By comparing differentially imprinted genes from the two species, I wish to develop further understanding on how genomic imprinting evolved after the transition of self-incompatibility to self-compatibility in flowering plants.
